This section describes the events that are directly related to those people who are actively involved in the development of Wingchun Kungfu within our Federation.
Wingchun Kungfu has been developing in Ukraine for more than 45 years.
Shifu Hoang Vinh Giang (from Vietnam).
Professor Hoang Vinh Giang is the progenitor of the Wingchun Kungfu development in the post-Soviet states. Hoang Vinh Giang, a Vietnamese citizen, came to the USSR to study, and it turned out that he had to study in Kyiv (capital of Ukraine). Professor Giang taught Vinh Xuan NoiGia Pai - the Vietnamese line of the Wingchun Kungfu system, the progenitor of which was Master Yuen Chai Wan (Nguyễn Tế-Công in Vietnamese). So far, this line has been almost unknown in the west, but now it gained extraordinary popularity. The practitioners of the “West” literally “rushed” trying to catch up, forgetting about their former Teachers. However, one of the principles of Wingchun teaches about “the danger of going to extremes”. Giang represented a master Tien’s line of Wingchun. Tran Thuc Tiến (some people pronounce it as Tran Thuc Tian. In Vietnamese there are at least 4 dialects so the pronunciation will differ according to the geographic location) was one of master Nguyễn Tế-Công’s main students. Kyiv was a pioneer in the development of the Wingchun system in the former USSR, and later in the CIS. The development of the Wingchun Kungfu system in the former USSR and in Ukraine is closely connected with the history of studying this style by Georgii Kuzmin. Georgii Kuzmin is the initiator and creator of the "Ukrainian Federation of Wingchun kungfu/Jeetkunedo”. At the end of 1977, Georgii Kuzmin’s Viet-vo-dao teacher - Le Van Kong, introduced him to Hoang Vinh Giang, who had just arrived in Kyiv for studying. In the spring of 1978, the first Wingchun Kungfu sports club started in Kyiv (not in Moscow) under the direction of Hoang Vinh Giang. His students, the first ones in the former USSR to study Wingchun Kungfu, were:
(Presidium of the "Ukrainian Federation of Wingchun kungfu/Jeetkunedo") It should be noted that nowadays, Kyiv hasn’t lost its tradition of leadership in the popularization and development of the Wingchun Kungfu system. 1989
In 1989, Georgii Kuzmin completed the Chinese language course of the "Second Kyiv State Foreign Language Courses", with a mark "Excellent" (Certificate No. 2343). The study period was 1986-1989. It is impossible to comprehend Kungfu, being completely unaware of the language and culture of the region.
On June 20, 1990, Georgii Kuzmin received a wushu gymnastics instructor qualification at the Center for Continuing Education of the All-Union association “Znanie” at the Moscow City Council of National Universities (Diploma No. T-001 of June 20, 1990). A lot of people in the hall are excited and want to study Wingchun Kungfu (even among people, who study other martial arts). Georgii Kuzmin meets Mr. Hoang Minh Bai – a student of Vũ Bá Quý. Vũ Bá Quý is one of the first students of Nguyễn Tế-Công. In late 1990, Georgii Kuzmin began to combine his work at the martial arts club “LOTUS” with work at the All-Union Kickboxing Council. In the Army Sports Club boxing hall Georgii Kuzmin trained Wingchun practitioners and entry-level kickboxers. The hall had been provided by Mikhail Matsikh and Vadim Zolotarev – Vitali Klitschko’s first boxing trainers. M. Matsikh and V. Zolotarev are the ones, who raised Vitali Klitschko and opened a path into professional sports for him. Serious level kickboxers in Kyiv were trained by Pavel Orel, Mikhail Matsikh, Vadim Zolotarev, Vladimir Shevchenko, Alexander Likhter, Yuri Bogatyrev, Anatoly Davidenko. Boxing and kickboxing were the main martial arts for them, they knew everything about the little details and nuances. Support was provided by Anatoly Klimanov, Richard Karpov, Vitaly Andreevich Bendelovsky (the first Ukrainian boxing champion of the USSR (1966, 54 kg)). Later, the All-Union Kickboxing Council was reorganized into the All-Eurasian Kickboxing Federation. G. Kuzmin worked there as Executive Director, and later as Vice President. During his work in kickboxing, Georgii Kuzmin gained a tremendous experience in a sports organization, that was involved in the development of contact martial arts, and learned a lot from well-known boxing coaches, many of whom were famous boxers. 1991 A trip to China. 1992 April-May, a trip to China. 2-nd traveling to China in May Las Vegas (US). The first seminar was held in Gorinchem under the guidance of three world-renowned masters of the Wingchun Kungfu system from Hong Kong: — Chu Shong-tin, Wang Kiu (王喬) è Wong Shun Leung (teacher of Bruce Lee). These three masters are among the first and the best students of Grandmaster Yip Man in Hong Kong. Chu Shong-tin is called the "King of Siu Nim Tao". Wang Kiu (1923-2009) is one of the best Wingchun style theorists and one of the best fighters in a “Hong Kong Wingchun clan”. Wong Shun Leung (1935-1997) is perhaps the best fighter in a “Hong Kong Wingchun clan”, and he’s also the one who taught Wingchun Kungfu system to Bruce Lee. Wong’s disciple Philipp Bayer (a man without a wrist) is sitting near him. G. Kuzmin is the only representative of the former USSR at this workshop, and of all the former socialist countries, Ivan Rzounek (the President of the Czech Wingchun Kungfu Association) and his four students. After this workshop, Georgii Kuzmin tries to attend all European seminars, held by masters Chu Shong-tin, Wang Kiu, and Wong Shun Leung. The second workshop G. Kuzmin attended was held in Rotterdam and The Hague by D. Wachtberger, the President of the Dutch Wingchun Kungfu Federation, and honorary president – master Wang Kiu. The workshop went on for more than a month. G. Kuzmin had to rent an apartment and hire an interpreter. He obtained a Wingchun Kungfu training program, and a special training videotape had been filmed. During the training, negotiations with master Wang Kiu took place, he advised to create a Wingchun Kungfu Federation in Ukraine and to take part in the creation of the European Wingchun Kungfu Federation. But at that time, the situation was not in favor of establishing a Wingchun Federation in Ukraine. On August 6, 1994, by the decision of the All-Eurasian Kickboxing Federation(AKF) presidium, the AKF president Oleg Ziborov (Moscow) appoints Georgii Kuzmin as the head of AKF for Wingchun Kungfu: “In order to assist the promotion of the martial arts, enrich CIS kickboxing school with eastern martial arts techniques, develop contacts and cooperation of AKF with sports organizations of the East”.
