This is how Rinpoche himself describes the importance of what was taught: “The teaching about what should be practiced and what to avoid is the central principle of the Three Wheels of Dharma of the Perfect Buddha and is the heart essence of all Sutras and Tantras. The division of what should be practiced and what not to practice is what separates samsara and nirvana, it is the best method for correcting mistakes and eliminating shortcomings, it is a ladder leading to higher realms and to Enlightenment”.

From November 27, a trip to Vietnam.
  • Meeting with the son of master Yuen Chai Wan (Nguyen Te Cong in Vietnamese) at his home. Yuen Chai Wan is known to be the founder of the Vietnamese line of Wingchun kungfu (Vịnh Xuân quyền in Vietnamese) and its Patriarch.
In the photo, I'm near the altar, on which the photo and bust of Te Cong are placed. Every day, when we came to the home of Te Cong’s son, we showed signs of reverence to Master Te Cong, made offerings and burnt incense.
Master Te Cong’s son gifted a huge photo of Master Nguyen Te Cong, for placing it in the training hall. The photo had a signature and the date, when it was served. Throughout the time spent there and daily meetings a huge amount of advice and recommendations regarding the lessons of Wingchun kungfu were received from the master's son.

  • Visiting the grave of master Yuen Chai Wan (Nguyen Te Cong in Vietnamese).

  • Meetings with Vietnamese, Nguyen Te Cong’s Wingchun line practitioners.
  • A visit to the Chan Buddhist monastery with pilgrimage purposes.

One day, Te Cong’s son asked me if I wanted to see an album with photos of Te Cong. I naturally expressed a desire to take a look. It is interesting to see at least the life captured in a photo of a person, about which you had heard so much from your Vietnamese Teachers. It was already late evening, and we were already going home. Te Cong’s son said that I need to come to his house tomorrow morning, and if I want, I can take a camera and take pictures of this album. The next morning, I came with a camera and expected to see a photo album with a lot of family photos. But there were not many family photos in the album, most of the album was filled with photos of Master Te Cong showing the wooden mannequin form. The photos were in a strict sequence and all the techniques were signed with Chinese characters. The terminology was classical, the same as in Foshan. There were no Vietnamese terms. I naturally began to diligently photograph each movement separately. The second surprise for me was that Te Cong’s son gave me the second folder with “Paired 108 movements”. So, quite unexpectedly, two sets of techniques (“Wooden Mannequin” and “Paired 108”) came to me in a documentary form. I had never even dreamed about it. Yes, the Vietnamese Teachers taught me this, but this was the original - as Master Te Cong did it. I came to Vietnam injured (some fractures were still healing), a bandage was applied to the left hand, so there was a direct reason to ask about methods of treating bruises and fractures. Te Cong’s son wrote me various injury treatment and recovery options. He showed samples of raw herbal materials, which were used by Te Cong for treating injuries. Te Cong’s son asked me a lot about my Teachers, and especially about Sum Nung. That’s because Sum Nung was the successor of Yuen Kay Shan, Te Cong’s brother. In addition, he gave me recommendations on who to better turn to for instructions on Wingchun kungfu in China, now that Sum Nung has passed away. Te Cong’s son listened attentively to my stories about how I trained with Chu Shong-tin in Hong Kong, and how, Chu Shong-tin treated my ligaments, which I had torn in South Korea. He asked a lot about learning from Sum Nung, how he explained to me the principles and “qualities” that are emphasized in Wingchun. Repeating almost word for word, what Master Sum Nung once said to me, that without “inner work” and the development of “qualities” there is no Wingchun. What are my impressions of Sum Nung, as a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. What methods and means Sum Nung used in the treatment of my ailments, old and new injuries. Knowing that I was studying traditional Tibetan medicine and Tibetan Buddhism, he asked about the Teachers, and what practices and methods I received. After all, Te Cong was a very good specialist in traditional Chinese medicine and Buddhism practitioner. He almost exactly predicted the time of his “departure”, and not long before that, he allowed to photograph the techniques that were placed and signed in the album. Before Te Cong’s “leaving”, signs of indisposition appeared, and two close students of him, came asking to give them certain techniques that Te Cong did not disclose to the very end.
